Événements
- 1er février : le couple Elvis-Priscilla Presley a une fille, Lisa-Marie, née à Memphis (Tennessee).
- 5 mars : premier concert de cross-over Jazz-classique dans une église. Jean-Christian Michel à Paris, église St Pierre de Chaillot.
- 29 avril : la comédie musicale Hair est présentée pour la première fois à Broadway. Elle tiendra l'affiche à 1 742 reprises jusqu'au premier juillet 1972. On y retrouve notamment les chansons Aquarius, Let The Sunshine In et Good Morning Starshine.
- avril : Simon et Garfunkel, Bookends. Les chansons parlent du désespoir et de l’anxiété des gens, de la vie américaine à la fin des années 1960. L’album qui est plus ou moins conceptuel contient l’un des plus gros succès du duo, Mrs. Robinson, une composition de Paul Simon pour le film Le Lauréat, (en anglais, The Graduate).
- mai : Renaud écrit sa première chanson dans la Sorbonne occupée.
- août : formation du groupe Led Zeppelin
- 7 septembre : premier concert de Led Zeppelin au club des jeunes de Gladsaxe devant une dizaine de spectateurs.
- 20 octobre : Dernier concert de Maurice Chevalier à Paris au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
- 26 octobre : premier concert de Frank Zappa à Paris sur la scène de l'Olympia, accompagné des Mothers of Invention.
- 5 novembre : sortie du 3e album de Jean-Christian Michel (Musique sacrée, avec le drummer Kenny Clarke). Les 3 disques apparaissent dans le top 5 du Classement des meilleures ventes de disques en France. Concert en l'église St Roch à Paris, devant plus de 3000 personnes : la totalité de l'émission de Jacques Lancelot sur Europe 1 lui est consacrée.
- 22 novembre : sortie de l'album blanc des Beatles.
- 5 décembre : sortie de Beggars Banquet des Rolling Stones.
- 8 décembre : après huit ans d'absence à la télévision, Elvis Presley fait un retour sur NBC. L'émission spéciale, sponsorisée par la marque Singer lui est entièrement consacrée. Il y chante habillé en cuir noir tous ses anciens titres entouré de ses anciens musiciens, D.J. Fontana, Scotty Moore. L'émission est appelée Elvis '68 Comeback NBC TV Special et remporte un succès d'audience exceptionnel. Elvis clôt l'émission avec une chanson engagée, If I Can Dream, qui fait référence au célèbre discours du pasteur Martin Luther King, assassiné quelques mois plus tôt, I Have a Dream.
- 3 décembre : Jean-Christian Michel, donne une semaine entière de concerts en l'abbaye de St Victor de Marseille. C'est la première fois qu'un artiste se produit 7 jours d'affilée dans une église.
- décembre : Serge Gainsbourg, 69 Année érotique.
- Robert Charlebois présente à Montréal le spectacle L'Ostidshow avec Louise Forestier, Yvon Deschamps et Mouffe, mêlant musique, comédie et monologues. Par la suite, avec Louise Forestier, il enregistre un disque qui révolutionne la musique populaire québécoise en mariant des expressions québécoises avec la musique rock psychédélique américaine. Sa chanson Lindbergh est en tête des palmarès francophones, tant au Québec qu'en France.
