Civil War est une chanson du groupe de hard rock américain Guns N' Roses sortie en single durant l'année 1993.

La Chanson

Au début de la chanson, l'on peut entendre un extrait d'un texte récité dans le film Luke la main froide^[1]. Quand Duff avait quatre ans, il était allé à une manifestation avec sa mère voir Martin Luther King^[2]. Cela lui a inspiré cette phrase : « Did you wear the black arm band when they shot the man who said: "Peace could last forever"? » qui fait littéralement référence à Martin Luther King. Le groupe parle aussi de John F. Kennedy quand il dit : « and in my first memories they shot Kennedy ». Il fait aussi référence à la guerre du Viêt Nam.

La chanson se termine avec la phrase : « What's so civil about war anyway? » (Qu'est-ce qu'il y a de courtois à une guerre civile de toute façon ?). C'est un jeu de mot en anglais sur le double sens de « civil ».

Civil War est la dernière chanson que le batteur Steven Adler a enregistré avec le groupe Guns N' Roses avant d'être remplacé par Matt Sorum.
