Bruce Willis (de son vrai nom Walter Bruce Willis) est un acteur, chanteur, scénariste et producteur de cinéma américain né le à Idar-Oberstein, en Allemagne de l'Ouest.

Après avoir enchaîné des petits rôles, Bruce Willis est révélé par la série Clair de lune, et devient l'une des plus grandes stars du cinéma d'action grâce au film Piège de cristal, le premier volet de la saga Die Hard. Depuis, il a joué dans de nombreux succès comme Pulp Fiction, L'Armée des douze singes, Le Cinquième Élément, Armageddon et Sixième Sens.

Les films dans lesquels Bruce Willis a tourné ont rapporté près de 3 milliards de dollars au box-office américain et 7 milliards au box-office mondial, ce qui en fait le huitième acteur le plus rentable de l'histoire du cinéma[1]. Bruce Willis s'est marié avec l'actrice Demi Moore en 1987, et ils ont eu trois filles avant leur divorce en 2000. Il est actuellement marié avec le modèle Emma Heming, avec qui il a eu une fille.

Biographie

Jeunesse

Bruce Willis est le fils de David Willis, un soldat américain basé sur la base d'Idar-Oberstein, en Allemagne de l'Ouest (RFA), et de Marlene, une Allemande travaillant dans une banque. Bruce a deux frères, David et Robert (décédé en 2001 des suites d'un cancer du pancréas) et une sœur, Florence. Avec sa famille, il quitte l'Allemagne pour les États-Unis à l'âge de 2 ans. C'est à Penns Grove, dans le New Jersey qu’il passe la majeure partie de son enfance. Au lycée, il montre déjà un vif intérêt pour la scène et préside le club de théâtre de l’école. Après le lycée, Bruce Willis trouve un emploi de gardien de sécurité à la centrale nucléaire de Salem puis transporte les équipes de travail à l'usine de DuPont Works à Deepwater, dans le New Jersey. Il démissionne après la mort d'un de ses collègues, puis travaille comme barman à New York.

À la fin des années 1970, Bruce Willis décide d'entamer une carrière d'acteur et suit une formation d'art dramatique à la Montclair State University. Il joue dans une représentation de La Chatte sur un toit brûlant, mais quitte cette école au cours de son année junior. Parallèlement, il se consacre à la musique et continue d'ailleurs à se produire sur scène avec son groupe. C'est à cette époque qu'il apprend à jouer de l'harmonica. Après cette expérience, Bruce Willis revient travailler dans les bars, mais cette fois pour un emploi à temps partiel à l'hôtel Plaza de Manhattan. Après de multiples auditions, Bruce Willis fait réellement ses débuts dans le théâtre avec la production Ciel et Terre de Broadway et acquiert de plus en plus d'expérience, notamment avec la pièce Fool for Love. Il joue également dans une publicité pour Levi's et une autre pour une marque de préservatifs féminins. Durant cette période, il fréquente l'Actors Studio, l'une des plus prestigieuses écoles d'acteur au monde.

Après quelques petits rôles et figurations comme Le Verdict avec Paul Newman et Deux flics à Miami avec Don Johnson, il sort de l'anonymat en 1986 grâce à la série télévisée Clair de lune, diffusée sur la chaîne ABC. Aux côtés de Cybill Shepherd, il incarne le détective David Addison Jr de 1985 à 1988, récoltant au passage l’Emmy Award du Meilleur Acteur Principal dans une série dramatique et le Golden Globe du Meilleur Acteur dans une série comique ou musicale en 1987. Bruce Willis connaît son premier succès au grand écran avec Boire et déboires, la comédie romantique de Blake Edwards dans laquelle il donne la réplique à Kim Basinger. En 1988, il est choisi contre tout attente pour tenir le rôle du policier John McClane dans le film d'action Piège de cristal de John McTiernan. Ce succès planétaire ouvre la saga Die Hard, avec des suites de plus en plus spectaculaires (58 Minutes pour vivre, Une journée en enfer, Die Hard 4 : Retour en enfer et Die Hard : Belle journée pour mourir) qui feront de Bruce Willis le digne successeur d'Arnold Schwarzenegger et de Sylvester Stallone dans le catégorie des rôles physiques.

Entre temps, Bruce Willis a profité de son succès cinématographique pour tenter une carrière de chanteur. Il a ainsi enregistré deux albums, The Return of Bruno (1987) et If It Don't Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger (1989). Désireux de varier son répertoire, il partage l'affiche avec Tom Hanks et Morgan Freeman dans Le Bûcher des vanités de Brian De Palma, puis tient la vedette des comédies d'action Le Dernier Samaritain de Tony Scott et Hudson Hawk, gentleman et cambrioleur dont il signe le scénario. Il tient ensuite un rôle à contre-emploi dans La mort vous va si bien de Robert Zemeckis, avec Meryl Streep et Goldie Hawn. Malheureusement, ces films sont des échecs commerciaux et freinent sa popularité.

Après ce court passage à vide, Bruce Willis retrouve le succès en tenant le rôle d'un boxeur en cavale dans Pulp Fiction de Quentin Tarantino, aux côtés de stars comme John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson et Uma Thurman. Bénéficiant d'un important engouement public et critique, Pulp Fiction devient le film culte de la décennie et lui permet de retrouver sa place dans le cinéma. Outre la saga Die Hard qu'il continue de porter avec succès, il enchaîne les films ambitieux : ainsi, dans L'Armée des douze singes de Terry Gilliam, il voyage dans le temps et se retrouve interné avec Brad Pitt. Dans Le Cinquième Élément de Luc Besson, il doit escorter une Milla Jovovich extra-terrestre, et dans Armageddon de Michael Bay, il commande une équipe d'astronautes (composée entre autres de Ben Affleck, Owen Wilson et Steve Buscemi) pour détruire une météorite qui menace l'humanité. Ces trois films de science-fiction à gros budget l'imposent comme l'archétype du sauveur du monde aux yeux du grand public.

À la fin de la décennie, Bruce Willis entame une collaboration réussie avec le réalisateur M. Night Shyamalan pour Sixième Sens avec Haley Joel Osment, et Incassable dans lequel il retrouve Samuel L. Jackson. Ces deux drames fantastiques lui permettent de montrer un autre aspect de son jeu, en y abordant des rôles plus psychologiques. Parallèlement, il fait des apparitions dans des séries populaires (Ally McBeal, Friends, That '70s Show) puis revient à la comédie dans Mon voisin le tueur où il intimide Matthew Perry. Après un passage par la guerre (Mission Évasion et Les Larmes du soleil), il est à la tête du casting quatre étoiles de Sin City de Robert Rodriguez, puis revient au film d'action pur et dur avec Otage du français Florent Emilio Siri ainsi que 16 blocs de Richard Donner.

Tournant de plus en plus, Bruce Willis renoue avec la science-fiction à travers Clones et Looper. Toujours prêt à reprendre les armes, il s'auto-parodie dans Red (avec John Malkovich et de nouveau Morgan Freeman) et rejoint G.I. Joe 2 : Conspiration, avec Dwayne Johnson. Aussi bien à l'aise dans les premiers rôles que dans les seconds rôles, il fait de nombreuses apparitions furtives comme dans Charlie's Angels 2 : Les anges se déchaînent ! de McG, Ocean's Twelve de Steven Soderbergh, Alpha Dog de Nick Cassavetes ou encore les deux premiers Expendables de son rival Sylvester Stallone.

Bruce Willis a été marié, de 1987 à 2000, à l'actrice américaine Demi Moore, union dont sont nées trois filles prénommées Rumer Glenn (1988), Scout LaRue (1991) et Tallulah Belle (1994). Le 22 mars 2009, Rogers & Cowan, l'agence en charge de ses relations publiques, annonce que l'acteur de 54 ans, vient de se remarier avec le mannequin Emma Heming, de 23 ans sa cadette. Ils se fréquentent depuis 2008[2],[3]. De cette union est née une fille, Mabel Ray (1er avril 2012).

Bruce Willis est gaucher[4] et parle l'allemand. Il a d'ailleurs été nommé ambassadeur de sa ville natale le jour de son cinquantième anniversaire. En ce qui concerne ses convictions, il est de religion protestante luthérienne. Au niveau politique, il dit n'appartenir à aucun parti bien qu'il ait souvent voté pour des candidats républicains lors de nombreuses élections.

Bruce Willis possède une grande fortune amassée au cours de sa carrière d'acteur et de ses actions dans divers sociétés. Il détient des propriétés à Los Angeles, loue un appartement dans le Trump Tower à New York, une maison à Malibu, un ranch dans le Montana, une villa à Parrot Cay dans les îles Turks et Caicos, et de multiples propriétés à Sun Valley, Idaho[5].

En 1996, Roger Director, écrivain et producteur de Clair de Lune, a écrit un roman à clef sur Bruce Willis intitulé A Place to Fall. Cybill Shepherd a écrit dans son autobiographie en 2000, Cybill Disobedience, que Bruce Willis était en colère contre Director, parce qu'il était décrit comme un «acteur névrosé et pétulant[6]."

En 1998, Bruce Willis a participé à Apocalypse , un jeu vidéo sur PlayStation. Le jeu a été annoncé avec Bruce Willis disposant d'un second rôle, et non pas comme le personnage principal. L'entreprise a retravaillé le jeu en utilisant la ressemblance de Bruce Willis et de la voix puis a modifié le jeu pour l'utiliser comme personnage principal[7].

En 2005, Bruce Willis a été promu Officier des Arts et des Lettres par la France pour son importante contribution dans l'industrie du cinéma mondial.

En 2008, Mr. Oizo a composé une musique portant le nom de Bruce Willis is dead, en guise de clin d'œil au morceau de L.A. Style, James Brown is dead with TNT[8]".

En 2010, il apparaît dans le clip Stylo, de Gorillaz, dans le rôle d'un tueur en voiture qui poursuit Murdoc, 2D et le cyborg de Noodle.
