Les protothériens (Prototheria) (du grec ancien prōtos « en premier » et de thērion « animal sauvage ») sont un clade de mammifères qui correspond dans certaines classification au rang de sous-classe. Ils comprennent les monotrèmes et d'autres taxons éteints qui leur sont apparentés. D'un point de vue phylogénétique, c'est le groupe frère des Thérimorpha (la branche comprenant les thériens)[1], dont ils se seraient séparés il y a au moins 166,2 Ma[2] et jusqu'à 186 Ma[3] d'après l'horloge moléculaire.
Caractéristiques[modifier | modifier le code]
L'une des caractéristiques marquantes de ce clade est l'oviparité, trait plésiomorphe parmi les mammifères.
Des études phylogénétiques confirment la distance génétique d'avec les thériens (lesquels partagent une encore plus grande similitude phylogénétique) et plus encore d'avec les sauropsides. Cela s'illustre particulièrement bien au travers de l'évolution du système immunitaire et des venins[4].
